Sarawak cabinet to discuss flood aid amount, says Premier

BINTULU: The Sarawak government will assess the amount of cash aid to be given to flood victims, said Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg today.

He said the state Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) would get the data on the damage suffered by floods victims registered at relief centres.

"From this data, we will evaluate how much financial assistance that we should give," he told reporters after being briefed on the flood situation at the Bintulu Community Centre relief centre here.

He said that on top of the funds from the federal government, the state government had allocated RM10 million to help flood victims and the amount might be increased if more was needed.

Abang Johari said the state government would conduct an audit after the floods had subsided to determine what repairs were needed.

"Secondly, we need to follow-up on the health of flood victims as normally, there would be an outbreak of water-borne diseases after floods," he said.

Abang Johari expressed the state government's gratitude to all agencies in the flood relief effort.

He also thanked the private sector for their donations, including RM600,000 from the Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers' Association (SHEDA).
