MetMalaysia forecasts monsoon surge for Sabah and Sarawak

KUALA LUMPUR: A monsoon surge is expected to occur from Feb 4 to 7, potentially bringing heavy and continuous rainfall to Sabah and Sarawak.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said that analysis of the latest weather forecasting models indicated that the surge could lead to adverse weather conditions in the affected areas.

In response, MetMalaysia has issued a strong wind and rough sea warning for the South China Sea waters, which will be in effect during the same period.

"The public is advised to stay updated by referring to our official website at www.met.gov.my, following our social media channels, and downloading the myCuaca app for the latest and verified information," MetMalaysia said in an advisory.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that more than 37,000 personnel from various agencies have been deployed to manage the flood situation in Sabah and Sarawak.

He said that the efforts were coordinated by the District Disaster Management Committee (JPBD) and the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) in the affected states.
