MARAN: The only way Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad could topple Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is by wresting 132 parliamentary seats currently held by Barisan Nasional (BN).
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said that former premier Dr Mahathir could only achieve that through the 14th General Election (GE14) – and it would be a tall order.
"Dr Mahathir, through PPBM (Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia) has only one seat (in Parliament).
"This presents a very difficult hurdle to overcome," he said.
Shahidan was commenting on a statement by Dr Mahathir that he has been trying to topple Najib since 2014.
The statement was part of testimony provided by Dr Mahathir during yesterday's Kuala Lumpur High Court hearing of his son Datuk Seri Mukhriz's defamation suit against the Prime Minister's press secretary, Datuk Seri Tengku Sharifuddin Tengku Ahmad.
Shahidan, who is also an Umno Supreme Council member, spoke after officiating the Maran Wanita Umno division meeting here today.
Also present was Maran Wanita Umno chief Datuk Rosni Zahari, its deputy chief Datuk Seri Shahaniza Shamsuddin and Maran Umno chief Datuk Seri Ismail Abd Muttalib.
