MERSING: Mariam Zakaria, who is 100-year-old, can’t wait to cast her ballot paper in the 14th General Election (GE14).
The mother of three from Kampung Hubong, Endau, near here, is said to be the oldest voter in Johor.
In the 13 general elections which the country held, only on three occasions, did the centenarian fail to cast her vote due to failing eye-sight and health problems.
Mariam said she is quite excited to exercise her voting rights this time round.
“Even though my eyesight is not good, I will not forego my right to cast my vote. I hope someone would take me to my voting centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pusat Air Tawar, Endau,“ she said.
Despite her poor health, Mariam said she is nevertheless determined to go out and choose her elected representative, as other Malaysians do.
Currently, Mariam is dependent on her grandchildren as well as income from oil palm holdings and the aid she receives from the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M).
“I see a lots of difference in this GE14 compared to the previous one, as I understand that there is a tough three-cornered fight for the Endau state and Mersing Parliament seat.
