SEREMBAN: The Rantau state seat by-election on April 13 is being held to correct an unfairness, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said here, yesterday.
According to Bernama, she reminded the rakyat that Pakatan Harapan (PH) had been unjustly prevented from contesting in the state constituency in the 14th general election in May last year.
The PH president said that although Malaysia had been praised for its peaceful transition of power in the general election, there can be no denying that unfairness still exists in the country.
“Now, we have to correct (the unfairness). Tok Mat (Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan) was the menteri besar, a powerful person who felt (his position was not under threat), that nothing would happen,” she said in her speech during a ceramah at Kampung Sri Lalang here, on Sunday night.
Also present were PH’s Rantau by-election candidate Dr S. Streram and Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Christina Liew, who is also chairman of Sabah PKR.
Dr Wan Azizah said that she does not deny that PH is contesting as the underdog, as the state seat is Mohamad’s stronghold.
“We urge the people to vote for our candidate (as he) will give the best service,” she said.
Dr Wan Azizah also pointed out that Dr Streram, who is a doctor by trade, would provide better services to the people were he elected.
Earlier, she performed Maghrib prayers at the Masjid Imam Haji Kahar and spent time talking with the congregation there.
The Rantau by-election will see Dr Streram going against Mohamad and two independent candidates, former DJ R. Malarvizhi and former lecturer Mohd Nor Yassin.
