PONTIAN: Umno expects no obstacles in its motion to amend the party's constitution to postpone party polls after the next general elections.
Party secretary general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the Special Umno General Meeting on the matter will be held this Sunday and adopted unanimously by the delegates.
The motion to postpone party polls to be held after the next general election was proposed by the Umno Supreme Working Council (MKT) at last month's Umno General Assembly.
"There is no sign that the motion will not be approved by the delegates at the Special PAU, this Sunday.
"This is because the same delegates who agreed with the motion (at the PAU) will re-vote on the motion this Sunday.
"If they had agreed (at the PAU), why should they (at the Special PAU this Sunday) disagree? I expect the proposed constitutional amendment regarding the party's election will be approved easily. It was discussed and approved in the last PAU," he said when contacted.
It was reported last Saturday, that Umno vice -president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin will table a motion to amend the Constitution to enable party polls to be held after the general election.
The motion is expected to be tabled before the presence of 2,666 delegates at the Special PAU, which will take place on May 15.
Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, in his policy speech at the movement's delegates' conference in conjunction with the Umno General Assembly 2021 on March 17 had proposed that the party's constitution be amended.
He was reported to have said that party elections should be held only after the general election to avoid any attempt to sabotage, weaken the party's unity and strength.
Meanwhile, Ahmad, who is also the Member of Parliament for Pontian, said only the motion would be tabled at the Special PAU which will take place at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Center (WTCKL).
He said, although the proposal had been approved in the last PAU, it had to be done under the procedures of the Registrar of Societies (RoS).
"The amendment to the party's constitution requires an extraordinary general assembly (EGM) and that is why UMNO is holding a Special PAU, this Sunday.
"Special PAU notices have been sent to all 2,666 delegates since a month ago," he said.
Commenting on the preparations for the Special PAU, Ahmad said, everything has been completed for the meeting on Sunday.
"So far, we have received over 2,000 confirmations of delegates who will attend and we expect 100 per cent attendance.
"Each division will send 14 representatives, including the division head. At the Special PAU, there will also be an Umno Day celebration and a party's Hari Raya celebration.
"The Special PAU is from 1.30pm to 3.30pm before being followed by the Umno day celebration and the party's Aidilfitri celebrations, "he said.
