GEORGE TOWN: DAP will field two new faces, both women, in parliamentary contests in the state.
State DAP secretary Lim Hui Ying, who is party chairman Lim Guan Eng's sister, will contest the Tanjung parliamentary seat in the Nov 19 general election.
This is Hui Ying's first-ever electoral contest. She was appointed a senator in August 2018.
The Tanjung seat was held by the siblings' father, Lim Kit Siang, from 1986 to 1999.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who won in Tanjung in GE14, will move to the Batu Kawan parliamentary constituency.
The former MP for Batu Kawan, Kasthuri Patto, had announced she would not be defending the seat.
Another DAP leader, Seri Delima assemblyman Syerleena Abdul Rashid, will contest the Bukit Bendera parliamentary seat.
DAP will contest seven out of the 13 parliamentary seats in Penang.
Its allies in Pakatan Harapan, namely PKR and Parti Amanah Negara, will contest four and two parliamentary seats, respectively.
Those who will defend their seats include Guan Eng (Bagan), Sim Chee Keong (Bukit Mertajam), RSN Rayer (Jelutong) and Ramkarpal Singh (Bukit Gelugor).
Announcing the candidate list at Konvoi Harapan here today, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said the candidates fielded by the party nationwide represented diversity.
"Here in Penang the candidates also represent diverse backgrounds.
"This is our strength," he said.
Loke said the state's candidate list was proposed by the state DAP committee and accepted by the candidate selection committee at the national level.
"So there will not be any dispute. As such, I hope all candidates will receive the full support of party members," he added.
Loke also recorded his and the party's heartfelt gratitude to Kasthuri for her services to the party and the people.
