KUALA LUMPUR: Fifty-seven candidates have registered their candidacy for the 2023 Umno election.

Umno election committee chairman Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad said the registration for the party election began on Feb 13 at the Menara Dato' Onn Auditorium at the World Trade Centre.

He said so far, no one had registered to contest the post of the vice presidents and the Wanita chief.

According to Shahrir, the candidates who had registered so far were vying for 12 of the 19 posts in the Supreme Council, Wanita, Puteri and Youth.

"There are 18 candidates vying for various posts in the Supreme Council," Shahrir said in a video uploaded on Umno's YouTube channel.

He said so far there was one candidate for the permanent chairman post, three for the deputy permanent chairman post and 14 candidates for the 25 posts in the Supreme Council.

Fourteen other candidates, Shahrir said, had signed up to run for posts in the Women's wing, 19 in the Youth wing and six in the Puteri wing.

For the posts in Wanita Umno, he said there was one candidate vying for the deputy permanent chairperson post, one candidate for the vice chief post and 12 candidates for the 20 exco posts.

"For the Youth wing, there is one candidate for the permanent chairman post, one candidate for the chief post and 17 candidates for the exco posts."

Shahrir said for the Puteri wing, there was one candidate for the deputy permanent chairperson post, three candidates for the chief post and two candidates to fill the 20 exco posts.

He added that those who were keen to register as candidates in the upcoming party polls could still do so as they had two weeks starting from Feb 13.

Shahrir expected the number of candidates to increase next week after the duty at the division level is completed and the candidates would send in their registration forms.
