Mat Sabu: I wouldn't be surprised if Pas reunites with DAP in near future [NSTTV]

PENDANG: Parti Amanah Negara president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said he would not be surprised if Pas reunites with DAP to form a political alliance in near future.

Mohamad, who is popularly known as Mat Sabu, said the Islamist party had no right to criticise any other political alliances, as it had a track record of allying with any political party for the sake of survival.

The former Pas deputy president said this was evident after the party's recent decision to work with former arch-rival Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, putting aside their previous political convictions.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please don't fall for fear mongering against DAP by Pas in the next (state) election. Don't be afraid to vote for Pakatan Harapan.

"Believe me, it's not impossible that the Pas president will chant 'DAP is our friend' in two years' time.

"We can even see that right now. Pas is getting closer with Dr Mahathir for the Malay Proclamation. These were idealogies they were fighting against back then.

"Whatever happened to their previous stances? The truth is, they will change their stances based on the situation," he said in a speech at the Jelajah Madani Kedah 2023 rally in Kubur Panjang, Pendang, on Monday night.

Present were Kedah Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid and Kedah Amanah chairman Datuk Dr Ismail Salleh.

In 1998, Pas and DAP formed the Barisan Alternatif coalition together with PKR and Parti Rakyat Malaysia to oppose the then ruling coalition, BN, during Dr Mahathir's first tenure as prime minister.

A decade later, the coalition was succeeded by the formation of Pakatan Rakyat, a political pact consisting of PKR, Pas and DAP.

However in 2015, the coalition disbanded after DAP resolved that Pakatan Rakyat ceased to exist after the party accepted Pas' 61st Muktamar's motion to sever ties with the party, effectively ending the Pas-DAP political alliance.

Meanwhile, Mohamad said he was ironically grateful for Pas' previous alliance with Umno, saying the Islamist party is now unable to criticise PH for allying with Umno.

"I have to thank them for getting friendly with Umno through Muafakat Nasional previously, as now they can't say anything about us being allies with Umno.

"Could you imagine the 'fatwas' they would have released if this wasn't the case? Back then if you supported Umno, they would accuse you of apostasy!"

In 2018, Pas and Umno formed Muafakat Nasional to oppose the PH federal government after the coalition won the 14th General Election.

Mohamad said attempts by Pas to instil fear and religious fanaticism amongst Muslims in the country could potentially lead to the country's downfall.

"It's unfortunate. Because of their behaviour, we now have Muslims who have developed this fanatic mindset.

"That same fanatic mindset has destroyed many countries such as Sudan, Syria and Iraq. Luckily, we haven't seen physical fighting happening here yet," he added.
