KKB by-election: MCA will not campaign if BN candidate not fielded

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA says it will not campaign in the upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election if unity coalition does not field a candidate from Barisan Nasional (BN).

The decision was made following a meeting of the party's political development committee which took place at the party's headquarters today.

"The committee held a meeting and discussed about the Kuala Kubu Baharu state by-election that will be held in Selangor.

"After careful consideration, the unanimous decision of the committee is that if the proposed candidate is not a member of any BN component party, then MCA will not participate in any campaign efforts," said the committee through a statement today.

Previously, MIC, which is also a BN component party, also said it will sit-out the campaign for the upcoming by-election which is scheduled to take place on May 11.

On Apr 4, the Election Commission (EC) set the date for the nomination of candidates and early voting for the by-election on April 27 (Saturday) and May 7 (Tuesday) respectively.

The Kuala Kubu Baharu state seat fell vacant following the death of its incumbent Lee Kee Hiong on March 21.

Lee, 58, who had been the Kuala Kubu Baharu assemblyman under the Hulu Selangor Parliamentary constituency since 2013, died after battling cancer in the past few years.

The Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election is the seventh by-election to be held after the 15th general election (GE15) in 2022.

The electoral roll for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election has 40,226 people consisting of 39,362 regular voters, 625 policemen, 238 armed forces personnel and spouses and one overseas absentee voter.
