Chow still unsure if he will contest in state party elections next month

BAYAN LEPAS: Questions have arisen if state DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow will contest and retain his chairmanship in the party elections next month.

To contest, candidates will have to get the support from at least two branches.

Speaking to newsmen here today, Chow, who is also Chief Minister, said he was unsure if he would be nominated.

He said nomination would only close on Aug 24, after which the party headquarters would inform the candidates eligible to contest.

"The candidates can either accept or reject the candidacy. So, I will have to wait until then to know if I received the needed support to contest.

"We will wait until then. That is the process," he said when met after the opening of three Food Bayana food court here.

It has been widely speculated that Chow might not contest in the coming party elections.

It was also widely speculated that state DAP secretary Lim Hui Ying would contest and be made the state chairman.

The Penang DAP elections have been fixed on Sept 22.

By tradition, the state party chief will hold the state's chief ministership.

Penang created history by becoming the first state in the country to table and pass a motion setting a two-term limit for the chief ministership back in November 2018.

This is Chow's second term as the chief minister.
