MyPPP appeals to rejoin BN

KUALA LUMPUR: The People's Progressive Party (MyPPP) has applied to rejoin Barisan Nasional as a component party.

BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said MyPPP, which quit the coalition after the 14th General Election, is seeking a return to the fold.

"I know this party has gone through ups and downs in navigating the political landscape of our country, and they have finally received a definitive court ruling in their favour.

"Legally, this decision cannot be disputed any further. As such, I will bring forth the appeal made by the leadership to review the decisions made by the previous leadership, particularly regarding the leader who announced the party's exit from BN without any decision from the party's top leadership.

"With the dismissal that has taken place and the appointment of new leadership, the BN top leadership will hold discussions in the upcoming meeting to review the appeal and the court's decision regarding the legitimacy of MyPPP," he told reporters at the party's first annual general assembly in five years at the World Trade Centre, here, today.

Earlier in his speech, Zahid assured that he would bring the matter to BN's top leadership, emphasising that MyPPP never officially left the coalition.

Zahid, who is also Umno president, expressed hope that the BN top leadership would understand MyPPP's situation.

He explained that major decisions within BN must be made by consensus among the party's leadership, in accordance with its constitution.

"I am confident that with the decision made by the courts, our friends in BN understand their (MyPPP) situation," he said.

In June, Zahid denied claims that BN had sidelined MyPPP.

He said while MyPPP was not a component party, it was part of the coalition under the "Friends of BN" banner along with 10 other parties.

In 2018, MyPPP formally announced its decision to leave BN with immediate effect to move as an independent party.

The Registrar of Societies then deregistered MyPPP on Jan 14, 2019, following a leadership tussle between the late Datuk Seri Maglin Dennis D'Cruz and Tan Sri M. Kayveas.

The crisis ended on April 11 last year when the Home Ministry approved MyPPP's appeal against deregistration and confirmed the validity of the MyPPP supreme council, which had elected D'Cruz as its president.

BN comprises Umno, MCA, MIC and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah.

Under BN's constitution, the decision to accept any political party as a component must be made through consensus.
