Bad news for fishermen of Sg Golok

THE water level at Sungai Golok, which borders Kelantan and Thailand, has dropped greatly owing to the prolonged hot spell.

A sandbar has formed in the middle of the river, and boat operators and fishermen fear for their safety while out on their boats. They do not want to be hit by rocks or driftwood in the shallow riverbed.

The width between the Malaysia and Thailand river banks also seems narrower. Sometimes villagers can just walk across the river to the neighbouring country.

The prolonged dry weather has caused the residents to be uneasy and worried because Sungai Golok was once a favourite place for fishermen and anglers, but now it is hard for them to make ends meet.

Kelantan is adversely affected by the climate change and global warming, compounded by rampant logging and illegal mining. The authorities need to do something before the situation spirals out of control.
