Communication, being considerate vital in virtual learning

LETTER: Long were the days where students and lecturers occupied academic buildings for teaching and learning activities.

The hustle and bustle of people discussing, explaining, arguing are all distant memories.

But lecturers sitting in front of computer screens can still be heard explaining subjects to students. Students, meanwhile, just need to look out for online meeting links.

It is all so different now. So that's why good communication and being considerate will keep distance learning going.

To illustrate this, let's imagine an 8am class. Lecturers should inform students if the class will start late, and students can ask lecturers if there are changes to the schedule. It does not cost anything to be courteous.

Students should inform their lecturers about anything that will affect their attendance. Students should also inform their family members about their class schedule.

Family gatherings can wait if there's a project due on the same date and time. Students can inform lecturers if they can't attend class.

Also, there should be options if assessments cannot be sent via a platform. Perhaps they can scan the documents and send them via email or WhatsApp. So communicate well and be considerate.
