LETTER: A new law has been gazetted to allow the Finance Ministry, Menteri Besar or Chief Minister to approve any supplementary expenditure or withdrawal from the Consolidated Fund without having to go through the Dewan Rakyat or the state legislative assembly during this emergency.
The law called the Emergency (Essential Powers) (Amendment) Ordinance allows for the disbursement of aid during the pandemic recovery period.
Hopefully, this will ensure the expediency of recovery measures put in place.
The powers to make laws and approve all expenditures necessary to ensure public security is crucial.
Another ordinance, the Anti-Fake News Act, is also important.
We have been hit by wave after wave of infections. This new law will help ensure the success of all measures, including the on-going national immunisation programme, which has been put in place to stem the virus.
There have been all kinds of fake, fabricated news and if not handled well, things might spiral out of control.
Those who spread fake news should understand that their antics will cause us more misery.
