Citizens must help preserve green habitats

LETTERS: I refer to the letter, "Firecrackers traumatise pets" (NST, May 12), and am happy to see more Malaysians are speaking out for the rights of animals.

It is important to recognise that our behaviour has an impact on the environment, which, in turn, affects the quality of lives of animals around us.

Unfortunately, the habitat of animals and birds, particularly those in urban green spaces, is often taken away for development.

As concerned citizens, one of the ways we can help animals and wildlife is by preserving the environment in which they live.

I commend the three-judge Federal Court bench that overturned the development order of Kuala Lumpur City Hall to build high-rise condomniums in Taman Rimba Kiara in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur.

The park is home to many hornbills and the proposed development would have adversely affected their habitat.

As individuals, we can become animal activists by joining forces and advocating for the preservation of green spaces and natural habitats. It is our responsibility to speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Citizens must be more proactive in protecting the welfare and interests of animals.
