Quality road maintenance should always be the order of the day

LETTERS: The Consumers' Association of Penang (CAP) calls on the Penang state government to review the standards of its road construction and maintenance in view of the numerous potholes and uneven road surfaces that pose a hazard to road users.

In a recent survey conducted by CAP, we found that among the main roads that are damaged are in Jalan Thean Teik, Jalan Paya Terubong, Jalan Jelutong, Jalan Perak, Jalan Bukit Gambir, and several other roads residential area.

With the large increase in motor vehicles, particularly private cars on the roads of Penang Island over a 10-year period, it is critical for roads to be well maintained.

Contractors who are tasked to construct, upkeep, and maintain the roads should be answerable for any shoddy road works that result in potholes and uneven road surfaces.

Recurrence of potholes and uneven surfaces only goes to show that the work carried out is shoddy.

It should be made their standard operating procedure to conduct weekly inspections on all the roads. The state government should emulate Singapore, in being able to keep their roads in tiptop condition.

Damaged roads are hazardous to road users particularly, if Penang anticipates a greater influx of tourists during holiday season or festivals.

Immediate remedial measures should be taken to ensure that our roads do not pose a danger to road users. Moreover, uneven road surfaces and potholes cause damage to the suspension and shock absorbers of a vehicle.
