MITEC awarded green building index certification

The Malaysia International Trade & Exhibition Centre (MITEC) has been awarded the Green Building Index (GBI) certification by the GBI Accreditation Panel.

MITEC earned its stripes based on 11 winning practices, including usage of recycling material during construction, installation of a 70 per cent UV repellent glass, rainwater harvesting, Co2 sensors and fresh air fans, motion sensor in public toilets, garden watering system based on timers, and mould prevention system.

MITEC chief executive officer Gunther Beissel said he is grateful to the experts who worked on the project, cultivating a culture and knowledge of sustainable designs and the practice of efficiency.

He said obtaining the GBI status reassures that it is on the right track to leave positive footprints for the environment.

“From the start, MITEC is built with a vision for its functionality as Malaysia’s largest trade and exhibition centre but also with strict intentions to ensure that the development preserves the surrounding environment.

"The benefits of green and well-maintained building seeps through in many ways. Tangible advantages for a building include increased property value, increased employee productivity and the platform for us to gain government and utility incentives," he said.

MITEC sits on a sprawling 75.5 acres of the KL Metropolis, an integrated development within the Kuala Lumpur's International Trade and Exhibition District.

It is the third-largest MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) venue in the Southeast Asia region and the largest trade and exhibition centre in Malaysia, offering over 51,000 sqm of exhibition space and triple volume exhibition halls with infinite possibilities.

MITEC also boasts the largest pillar-less exhibition hall in Malaysia with 12,960 sqm of column-free space on one level, 11 spacious exhibition halls as large as eight football fields combined, a ballroom, a mini ballroom, a multi-purpose hall, and 13 meeting rooms, among others.
