Building resilient cities

KUALA LUMPUR: Resilient urbanisation is critical to ensuring the living environment can withstand the evolving challenges that threaten it, said Deputy Local Government Development Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir.

This aligns with Malaysia Madani's six core values of sustainability, care and compassion, respect, innovation, prosperity, and trust, he said.

These values can be manifested through good city design, affordable housing, resilient public transport, a green building index, a centralised green lung, sustainable development goals, and a walkable city', said Akmal after officiating the 14th World Class Sustainable Cities (WCSC).

According to Akmal, the ministry is currently working on five key initiatives that all contribute to the goal of creating a resilient city.

These key initiatives include the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) to meet the zero-emission goal by 2050; the implementation of a Smart City Recognition Programme this year by selecting five key cities as the programme's pioneer cities; an urban renewal act scheduled to be tabled next year with the goal of speeding up the redevelopment plan of old buildings; and the establishment of electric charger (EV) charging station guidelines to meet the goal of 10,000 EV charging stations by 2025.

WCSC chairman Chan Jin-Wy said in his welcoming remarks that the conference has served as a platform that fosters constructive exploration, knowledge sharing, and continuous learning.

"It is through these pillars that we paved the way for the realisation of a world-class sustainable city," he said.

The conference, themed "Resilient Urbanisation Planning Towards Malaysia Madani," was organised by the Real Estate and Housing Developers' Association Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysia Architect Association, and the Malaysian Institute of Planners.
