SME developers can ride on catalyst projects like SFZ, date centres for growth

KUALA LUMPUR: Small and medium-sized (SME) property developers can benefit from significant economic projects nationwide, including Johor's Special Economic Zone (SFZ) , said Public Bank Berhad managing director and chief executive officer (CEO), Tan Sri Dr. Tay Ah Lek.

Tay highlighted that developers could also take advantage of the substantial investments transforming Johor into Southeast Asia's largest data centre hub.

The bank aims to enhance collaboration with SME developers to facilitate their transition to a low-carbon economy.

Tay said that SME developers can utilise Public Bank's green financing solutions and Bank Negara Malaysia's Low Carbon Transition Facility, which supports the adoption of renewable energy, energy-efficient technologies, and sustainable construction materials.

"At the same time, buyers of green properties can also enjoy Public Bank's preferential pricing and other add-on benefits for end-financing of green-certified homes, commercial buildings, and industrial premises," Tay said in a statement.

Since 2020, Public Bank has mobilised over RM53 billion in sustainable finance, more than half of its RM100 billion target by 2030.

Tay said the bank's proactive efforts to green the real estate sector, adopting a holistic approach to cater to both developers and buyers of sustainable properties.

Recently, Public Bank held a green real estate seminar in Johor to raise sustainability awareness among SME developers in the southern region.

The event attracted over 200 participants from Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, and Kelantan, as well as representatives from the Real Estate and Housing Developers Association Malaysia (REHDA).

REHDA Johor chairperson, Tan Lindy, agreed with Tay's view on the crucial role SME developers play in advancing the country's sustainability agenda.

She praised Public Bank's timely initiative, noting the increasing demand for sustainable property development in Johor.

Datuk Ngoh Chun How, chairperson of REHDA Melaka, also acknowledged the bank's continued support in helping SME developers embrace sustainable practices.

Dylan Tan, group CEO of AME Group, added that sustainable development by SME developers will be key in accelerating Malaysia's transition to a developed, green economy.
