Tough opening match awaits Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong

GLASGOW: National doubles coach Jeremy Gan is expecting his charges Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong to find the going tough in their opening match at the World Championships tomorrow.

V Shem-Wee Kiong have been given a bye for the opening round and will play South Korean pair, Chung Eui Seok-Kim Dukyong in their first match.

It will be their first match since the Australian Open in June, where they lost in the first round.

Jeremy believes their first match will decide how far they will be able to progress in the tournament.

"The first match is always important. It will be tough for them (V Shem-Wee Kiong) as they have not played (competitively) for two months while their opponents have played in the first round here," said Jeremy.

"I want them to be prepared for any possible situation."

Jeremy added that the duo, who have struggled for form this season, need to have a strong understanding between them as well as a shared desire to win.

"It is important that they are both on the same page, only then will they be able to play to their true potential.

"I do not want them to think about past sucesses or failures, they have to forget about that. The number of tournaments and the quality of their opponents continues to increase, so they too need to keep improving."

V Shem and Wee Kiong have not won a title since the Super Series finals in Dubai in December last year.
