Peng Soon, Liu Ying together again

KUALA LUMPUR: After six months apart, national mixed doubles, Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying will be reunited once again by January.

Peng Soon who confirmed the move, said that it is the best motivation for them especially as they will be playing in a few big tournaments next year including the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and World Championships.

“According to the coach’s plan, the first tournament that I will take part in together with Liu Ying is the Malaysian Masters. This is something positive for us as we start off in a major tournament next year.

“I just hope that Liu Ying will not be bogged down by injury and the same goes for me as well. We also hope to return at our best form like before,” said Peng Soon when met after the sponsorship and players introduction ceremony for the Ampang Jaya Badminton Club here today.

Peng Soon-Liu Ying, who won a silver medal in the mixed doubles at last year’s Rio Olympics, had to be split up after Liu Ying was sidelined for a lengthy period after having to undergo an operation on her shoulder in May.

Liu Ying’s absence saw Peng Soon paired up with fellow national mixed doubles shuttler, Cheah Yee See.

PengSoon-Yee See’s partnership showed positive signs as they notched up some impressive results and performances including winning the Russian Open Grand Prix and reaching the semi-finals of the Denmark Open last month.

In fact, they also made it to the semi-finals of the Macau Open where they fell at the hands of Zheng-Siwei-HuangYaqiong early last month.

Liu Ying will begin her return to competitive action with a new partner for now in Chen Tang Jie where they will take part in the India International Series Championship from tomorrow till Sunday, and the India International Challenge from Nov 29 to Dec 3.

It is a move to get her back into action and to regain match fitness.

Peng Soon-Yee See will feature together competitively for the last time at the Korean Masters which begins on Tuesday (Nov 28).

“I hope we can achieve a positive result in South Korea. During this time playing with Yee See, she has showed a lot of improvement though there are still a couple of areas that she will need to work on to further improve and enhance her game.

“Yee See just needs to keep on working hard at improving her all-round game as she has great potential to go far,” said Peng Soon.
