KUALA LUMPUR: Lee Chong Wei has urged his Malaysian teammates not to be afraid of defending champions Denmark when both teams face each other in the Thomas Cup in Bangkok in May.
The World No 6 said Denmark will be Malaysia’s biggest challenge in Group D, also comprising Russia and Algeria.
“Denmark have a well-balanced team. They are equally strong in singles and doubles. However, this should not be made an excuse for us to throw in the towel,” said Chong Wei.
Chong Wei, Lee Zii Jia and Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin are the confirmed shuttlers for singles with the fourth member yet to be determined.
“We need to start preparing and study our opponents’ strong points. I want my teammates to get fired up and show good teamwork before the battle in Bangkok.”
In the 2016 Kunshan edition, Malaysia were edged 3-2 by Denmark in the semi-finals.
Chong Wei, 36, said it would be important for Malaysia to finish as group winners as it will guarantee a good draw in the next round.
“We will be seeded in the quarter-finals if we win the group. If this happens, we will be able to go far in Bangkok.
“However, we cannot underestimate Russia and Algeria. Our team need to do their best in every tie,” Chong Wei added.
For the record, Malaysia last won the prestigious tournament in 1992.
