GOLD COAST: Lee Chong Wei's hopes of becoming the country's most successful Commonwealth Games athlete were dashed when Malaysia were defeated 3-1 by India in the mixed team final at Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre on Monday. Chong Wei was aiming for the mixed team gold to equal Koo Kien Keat's record of five titles and later surpass it in the men's singles.
India's R. Satwik-P. Ashwini won the opening match by overcoming Chan Peng Soon- Goh Liu Ying 21-14, 15-21, 21-15 in 65 minutes in the mixed doubles.
The Malaysians were leading 11-7 in the third game before Satwik-Ashwini changed their strategy to claw back for a win.
"We were in control at 11-7 before they changed their style and service game.
"We did try to counter but were not successful," said Liu Ying.
World No 6 Lee Chong Wei next stepped on court and hopes were high that he would level the tie.
However, K. Srikanth, the World No 2, played a solid match to upset the Malaysian 21-17, 21-14 to hand India a 2-0 lead.
Malaysia pulled one back when they won the men's doubles match through Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, who defeated Satwik-S. Chirag Chandrashekhar 21-15, 22-20.
Saina Nehwal was the toast for India by clinching the winning point with a 21-11, 19-21, 21-9 victory over Soniia Cheah.
England won bronze with a 3-0 win over England.
