Kisona stuns former world No 1 Saina at Swiss Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Women's singles S. Kisona scored one of her biggest wins in recent times after pulling off an upset win over former world No 1 Saina Nehwal of India on Thursday to advance to the quarter-finals of the Swiss Open.

The world No 64 triumphed 17-21, 21-13, 21-13 in 55 minutes to reach her first World Tour quarter-finals since the 2018 Orleans Masters.

It should take some pressure off Kisona who has been under fire for her poor form since winning the Sea Games title in 2019.

Kisona will play Thailand's Supanida Katethong today for a place in the last four.

In the men's doubles, Malaysia will be represented in three of the four last-eight matches today featuring Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani.

Aaron-Wooi Yik easily dispatched India's Bokka Navaneeth-B. Sumeeth Reddy 21-15, 21-14 while Yew Sin-Ee Yi overcame Alexander Dunn-Adam Hall of Scotland 21-16, 21-12.

German Open winners Sze Fei-Izzuddin took a step closer to their second victory in three weeks with a 23-21, 21-18 win over Jeppe Bay-Lasse Molhede of Denmark.

But they have a tricky encounter with former world junior champions Leo Rolly Carnando-Daniel Marthin of Indonesia.

Aaron-Wooi Yik and Yew Sin-Ee Yi will take on German Marvin Seidel-Mark Lamsfuss and Indonesia's Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto, respectively.

If both pairs win, then Malaysia are assured of a place in Sunday's final.

Lim Chiew Sien-Vivian Hoo and Anna Cheong-Teoh Mei Xing also made the women's doubles quarter-finals.

Chiew Sien-Vivian eliminated compatriots Low Yeen Yuan-Valeree Siow 21-14, 21-12 while Anna-Mei Xing put up another steady display to outplay Cheryl Seinen-Debora Jille of Netherlands 21-15, 21-14.

In the mixed doubles, India Open runners-up Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei failed to advance after losing 21-19, 21-19 to French aces Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue.
