BAM won't 'mess around' with Commonwealth Games

For the recent Sea Games, BAM didn't send their best shuttlers. What about next month's Commonwealth Games which do not involve big guns Indonesia, China, Japan and South Korea?

Well, BAM are treating the Commonwealth event in Birmingham seriously, and will send their best team.

And India, who unexpectedly won the Thomas Cup last month,

and also have formidable women's players, look hard for Malaysia to overcome.

The BAM have announced that in an effort to reclaim the Commonwealth Games mixed team gold, Malaysia will send their best shuttlers.

This was confirmed by BAM doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky after the Commonwealth Games draw was released on Wednesday by the Badminton World Federation.

Malaysia are drawn in Group 4 with South Africa, Jamaica and Zambia. India are in Group 1 with Australia, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Rexy, whose choice of team line-up was questioned after Malaysia's 3-2 loss to India in the recent Thomas Cup quarter-finals, said: "We want to win back the gold, but it won't be easy, India are very strong now.

"But this is the Commonwealth Games, not some small time event, we will definitely send our best players.

"Unlike the Thomas Cup that relies more on three singles players, the Commonwealth Games will be a test for our doubles department with three doubles matches (men's, women's doubles and mixed doubles) and two singles."

Malaysia have often won the Commonwealth Games mixed team gold since the 2006 edition in Melbourne, before India dethroned them for the first time in 2018 in the Gold Coast, Australia.

THE DRAW — Group 1: India, Australia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan

Group 2: England, Singapore, Mauritius, Barbados

Group 3: Canada, Scotland, Maldives, Uganda

Group 4: Malaysia, South Africa, Jamaica, Zambia.
