Double joy for Roy King

KUALA LUMPUR: Yap Roy King made it two out of two and the biggest winner at the National Championships on Sunday, completing the double with his partners Wan Arif Wan Junaidi and Valeree Siow at Juara Stadium, Bukit Kiara.

In the men's doubles, Roy King-Arif saw off the in-form independent duo of Low Hang Yee and Ng Eng Cheong 21-17, 21-12. While in the mixed doubles final, Roy King-Valeree downed Choong Hon Jian-Go Pei See 21-19, 21-18.

In total, Roy King alone pocketed RM12,500 in prize money for his efforts. Speaking to the press, Roy King said he will continue to play in two events, as it gives him confidence.

"I know the decision lies with the coaches at the end of the day, but I believe I can play in two events.

"I gained a lot of confidence and experience," said Roy King, who had previously won a double as a junior player at the Malaysia Junior International in 2019 and again at the Latvia International in 2021.

As a new pair that only came together in March, Roy King-Arif have done well to move up to No 85 in the world rankings.Last month, they won the Nantes International Challenge and also reached the semi-finals of the Denmark Masters.

Meanwhile, Arif hopes to continue playing with Roy King.

"I want to thank my partner, and I hope to continue playing with Roy King.

"We are now ranked No 85 in the world, and it will be a pity to break up and start from scratch again.

"Surely, we will have some ups and downs, but we don't let ourselves get carried away. We complement each other well and have got good rotation on court.

"We need to improve our defence consistency," Arif added.

Separately, independent shuttlers Vivian Hoo and Lim Chiew Sien bagged the women's doubles title after seeing off Cheng Su Hui-Vanessa Ng 21-13, 21-17 in the final.

The title was Vivian's fourth national crown but first with Chiew Sien. Chiew Sien won the title at the 2019 edition with her then-partner Teoh Mei Xing.
