Antonsen speechless after winning first Super 1000 title

KUALA LUMPUR: One can expect Denmark's Anders Antonsen to throw a huge celebration after winning his first Super 1000 title today

The 27-year-old men's singles shuttler was speechless after seeing off China's Shi Yu Qi 21-14, 21-13 in the Malaysia Open final at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

Antonsen's victory also sees the men's singles title remaining in Danish hands, succeeding world No. 1 Viktor Axelsen, who won the last two editions.

Axelsen's reign was ended by Yu Qi in the semi-finals on Saturday.

Before Antonsen's win, the only other countries, besides Malaysia, to secure three consecutive men's singles titles were China and Indonesia.

Antonsen, who pocketed US$91,000 (RM423,000) for his feat, said: "It feels amazing and incredible, but I'm emotionless now.

"I am still in shock, but I'll probably realise in the next few hours that this is the biggest moment of my life.

"Right now, however, I feel a bit empty."

Antonsen expected a tough match, but Yu Qi failed to put up a fight.

"Yu Qi played a tough tournament, three games yesterday and also very late.

"I think he played well, but it was an uphill battle for him in the second because he was against the draft.

"That is why I needed to win the first game," he added.

As for celebrating his first Super 1000 title, the former European champion said: "A big dinner! I don't know if I'll go for pizza or burger, or some lobster and caviar.

"I love my food, Malaysian, Japanese, or Chinese. I'll have to see what my coach is up to."
