Being strong is not enough, says Wooi Yik

KUALA LUMPUR: Men's badminton doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik believe that tactics will be imperative if they are to advance past the quarterfinals at the Paris Olympics.

Wooi Yik said there is little margin for error when competing against the best pairs in the world.

He added that their defeat to world No.1 pair Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang (China) on Monday has motivated them to further tighten up their game.

Their opponents in the quarterfinals will only be known when the draw is conducted later tonight.

"None of the pairs competing in the quarterfinals will be easy to play against. We have to be at our best when playing against the best," said Wooi Yik.

"Being strong is not enough, you have to be prepared in all aspects including tactics. Everything has to be tidied up.

"We have to be really focused going into the knockout rounds."

The world No. 4 pair finished runners-up to Wei Keng-Wang Chang in Group A. They notched two wins in the group against Ben Lane-Sean Vendy (Great Britain) and Adam Dong-Nyl Yakura (Canada).

Aaron-Wooi Yik had won bronze on their Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020. They defeated Mohamad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan (Indonesia) in the bronze medal decider.
