A smashing start by Fareez at Paris Paralympics

KUALA LUMPUR: The national contingent kicked off their Paris Paralympics campaign on a bright note, with shuttler Fareez Anuar pulling off an upset in the men's singles SU5 event today.

Fareez upstaged second seed Fang Jen Yu of Taiwan in his Group B opener, 21-14, 21-18, while Malaysia's defending champion Cheah Liek Hou defeated Poland's Bartlomiej Mroz 21-10, 21-6 in his Group A opener at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena.

However, in the men's singles SL4 event, Amin Burhanuddin suffered a 21-17, 15-21, 20-22 defeat to India's Sukant Kadam in his Group B opener. In the men's doubles WH1-WH2 Group B, Ikhwan Ramli- Noor Azwan Noorlan went down 21-17, 13-21, 16-21 to Japan's Daiki Kajiwara-Hiroshi Murayama.

Swimmer Nur Syaiful Zulkafli finished fifth with a time of 2:52.67 in the men's 200m swimming S5 heats at the Paris La Défense Arena. Neutral athlete Kirill Pulver finished top in the heats with 2:34.31, Ukrainian Oleksandr Komarov was second with 2:38.86 and China's Wang Lichao came in third with 2:46.20.

At the South Paris Arena, boccia player Lee Chee Hoong went down 11-2 to Indonesia's Bintang Herlangga in the men's individual - BC2 Group E opener.

In a women's individual BC4 Group B match, Noor Askuzaimey Mat Salim beat Ukraine's Nataliia Konenko 8-6.

Track cyclist Yusof Hafizi Shaharuddin settled for fifth place with a time of 3:55.254 in the men's C1 3000m individual pursuit qualifying round at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines National Velodrome.

China's Li Zhangyu broke the world record with a time of 3:31.338 and will take on compatriot Liang Weicong, who clocked 3:42.468, in the gold medal race later tonight.
