BAM to name Hendrawan's replacement on Friday

KUALA LUMPUR: The BA of Malaysia (BAM) will unveil its new national singles and women's doubles coaches on Friday.

National coaching director Rexy Mainaky confirmed that an agreement has been reached with a new head coach, who will replace former singles coach Hendrawan.

The new coach will oversee both the men's and women's singles squads at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM).

Rexy revealed that he and BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh had a successful Zoom meeting with the candidate yesterday to finalise contract details for the position.

"BAM and the coach have reached an agreement on the contract offer. However, the candidate requested a few days before confirming.

"I'll text him later today to follow up. The deal is 95 per cent done, and hopefully, we can announce the coach on Friday," Rexy told the media after a training session at ABM in Bukit Kiara today.

Indonesian coach Mulyo Handoyo, who previously coached world and Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat, and Denmark's Kenneth Jonassen are the two leading candidates for the head of singles role.

As for the new women's doubles head coach, Rexy said a candidate has also been secured but requested privacy until Friday's announcement.

"This is the candidate's request, and we have to respect it. If all goes well, I'll reveal the women's doubles coach on Friday too," Rexy added.

Rosman Razak, currently coaching independent shuttlers, is a strong contender for the women's doubles role.

Both new coaches will start work immediately after Friday's announcement.

The reshuffle follows the recent departures of long-serving men's singles coach Hendrawan and singles coach James Chua, who has taken up a role with the Czech Republic BA.
