Axelsen's withdrawal opens door for Zii Jia in Hangzhou

KUALA LUMPUR: Two-time Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen has withdrawn from the season-ending World Tour Finals (WTF) in Hangzhou on Dec 11-15, citing an injury to his left foot.

In a post on his X account today, the world No. 3 said the injury required immediate attention to avoid long-term complications

The Dane revealed that the decision was made on the advice of medical specialists.

"I am very disappointed not to be able to play in this tournament, which is one of my favourites," said Axelsen.

"However, my priority now is to ensure a full recovery before returning to the court."

Axelsen, a five-time winner of the prestigious season-ending tournament, admitted the decision to withdraw was a tough one but necessary for his health.

"Thank you to everyone who has always supported me. It means so much to me," he added.

China's Li Shi Feng, ranked eighth in the World Tour standings, will replace Axelsen in the tournament, which offers a prize purse of US$2.5 million (RM11.17 million).

With Axelsen's absence, Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia may fancy his chances of clinching the coveted title.

Other contenders include Denmark's Anders Antonsen, China's Shi Yu Qi, Taiwan's Chou Tien Chen, Japan's Kodai Naraoka, Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn and Indonesia's Jonatan Christie.
