KUALA LUMPUR: It has been 60 years since the nation triumphed in the women's singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles at the Malaysia Open.
The 1965 edition saw former Asian Games champion Rosalind Singha Ang shine, clinching the women's singles title and pairing with Teoh Siew Yong to secure the women's doubles crown.
Teh Kew San-Ng Mei Ling were the last Malaysian pair to win the mixed doubles title that year.
Will this year's national contingent end the title droughts at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil?
The Super 1000 tournament begins on Tuesday.
In the women's singles, Malaysia's sole representative is Goh Jin Wei, ranked world No. 43.
Jin Wei faces world No. 32 Malvika Bansod in the first round but is not expected to progress far, given the presence of Paris Olympic champion An Se Young of South Korea and China's second seed Wang Zhi Yi.
In the women's doubles, third seeds Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah remain the country's best hope following their impressive performances last year.
The world No. 6 will face tough challenges from formidable pairs representing China, South Korea, and Japan.
Nonetheless, with strong home support, Pearly-Thinaah could be inspired to claim the biggest title of their careers.
Meanwhile, world No. 6 Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai are confident they can end the 60-year wait for a mixed doubles victory at the Malaysia Open.
"Many Malaysian pairs are doing very well and giving us tough competition on court.
"I believe one of the Malaysian pairs can win the title after 60 years," said Shevon, 31.
Soon Huat, 34, hopes to draw confidence from their victory at the Malaysia Masters at the same venue last year.
"It's a special feeling to stand on top of the podium in a home tournament. The final at the Malaysia Masters last year was electrifying," said Soon Huat.
Other Malaysian pairs with the potential to break the title drought include world No. 5 Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and world No. 20 Ho Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin.
However, Soon Huat-Shevon will aim to outpace their compatriots and ride to victory in this year's edition.
