KUALA LUMPUR: After an arduous journey by land and air, track cyclists Azizulhasni Awang and Shah Firdaus Sahrom reached their Tokyo Olympics accommodation in Shizuoka last night.
The duo wasted no time in testing out the structural rigidity of the Games' much-talked about recyclable beds in a light-hearted video shared on social media.
Shah, who was seen jumping on the bed, as other athletes before him have done, was visibly impressed.
"Today, I want to test the strength of this bed, which is made from cardboard. Some people have said this bed is only strong enough to support one person," said Shah in the video recorded by Azizulhasni.
"(After jumping on it) I guess that proves that it (bed) is strong."
Azizulhasni admitted that the long journey did take its toll on the Pocket Rocketman though he remains in high spirits ahead of the competition.
The pair took a seven and a half hour flight from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Narita International Airport where they underwent security and Covid-19 checks followed by a four-hour bus ride to Shizuoka.
"The standard operating procedures are very tight here and we had to pass a number of check points before clearing immigration,"said Azizulhasni.
"This is, however, for the safety and benefit of all. Of course it is a little bit tiring but this is part of our journey in the road to success.
"I am still fired up and feel very excited to have arrived in the Land of the Rising Sun."
Azizulhasni and Shah will compete in the men's individual sprint and keirin events at the Izu Velodrome on Aug 4-8.
