Beasley disappointed with duo

NATIONAL track cycling coach John Beasley is not pleased with how Shah Firdaus Sahrom and Fadhil Zonis fared at the recent World Championships in France.

Beasley, who is rarely critical of his riders, admitted that both were far from their best in Roubaix.

Neither Fadhil nor Shah made a final in the world meet.

The Australian did not make the trip to France due to travel complications.

"I am disappointed in Shah's keirin races as he is capable of better performances in the discipline," said Beasley.

"The only thing I can put it down to is the long preparation period going into the Tokyo Olympics.

"If we take that (keirin) out of the equation, it was (still) not one of our best World Championship outings.

"It was solid (in certain areas) but far from their best.

"I have not had the time to have a debrief with the athletes and staff, so I do not really know the full story yet."

Beasley, who is working on the national squad's blueprint for the next Olympic cycle, said the riders will now prepare for next year's Birmingham Commonwealth Games and Hangzhou Asian Games.

"I will give Fadhil and Shah a short break after they complete their hotel quarantine in Malaysia before we start our Commonwealth and Asian Games campaign," added Beasley.

"The plan is to have both boys (training) here in Melbourne until the end of May together with a few other young male and female riders.

"The plan is to pack everything up and bring the programme back to Malaysia after May."

The national elite squad have been based in Melbourne for over a decade as Malaysia previously did not have a suitable training venue.

The completion of the National Velodrome in Nilai in 2017 has given them the option to return.
