Nurul in no mood to celebrate

KUALA LUMPUR: Kedah's Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri bagged her second gold at the Malaysia Games by winning the women's 500m time trial final at the National Velodrome in Nilai today.

But the petite rider was not in the mood to celebrate as her time of 35.545s was not enough to better her personal best of 34.668s set at the national championship in December last year.

Penang's Nurul Aliana Syafika Azizan came in second with 36.618 and Nurqadrina Emylia Norzali of Selangor clocked 36.928 for the bronze medal.

On June 19, Izzah became the first Malaysian woman rider to win a gold medal at the Asian Championships in New Delhi when she topped the 500m time trial event with a time of 35.499s.

Izzah, who won the women's sprint gold and women's team pursuit silver medal a day earlier, seemed to feel the strain of back-to-back races, but has vowed to bounce back in her remaining events.

"I'm not satisfied with my performance, I targeted bettering my personal best here and this is my pet event but I couldn't achieve it," said the 19-year-old.

"Maybe I'm a bit tired from competing in two events yesterday, and I feel that I need to do better in training to improve.

"I'll be competing in the women's team sprint tomorrow and keirin on Thursday."

In the men's team sprint, Perak's Ahmad Safwan Ahmad Nazeri, Zakwan Hamidon and Nadzrul Hafidzy Mohd Hafidz picked up the gold medal after clocking 58.692s.

Johor's Amar Danial Masri, Estiqfaiq Eiszaham clocked 58.412s to settle for the silver medal, while Darwish Putra Muhd Sanusi, Mohd Fariz Haikal Mohd Kadir and Umar Hasbullah won the bronze for Kedah with 57.528s.

In the men's 4km individual pursuit, Negri Sembilan's Abdul Azim Aliyas beat Sabah's Lim Chun Kiat for the gold, while Zulhelmi Zainal of Johor beat Sarawak's Maximillian Fong Hung Chiat for the bronze.

Johor's Siti Nur Adibah Akma Mohd Fuad won the women's omnium gold after collecting 159 points, Terengganu's Nor Aisyah Munirah Chek Ramli came second with 144 points while Nyo Ci Hui of Perak picked up the bronze with 144 points.
