Long training camp had Azizulhasni itching for action

KUALA LUMPUR: Azizulhasni Awang has dubbed the national squad's recent European training camp as "one of the best" he has taken part in throughout his career.

Azizulhasni, Shah Firdaus Sahrom and Izzah Izzati Asri spent the past two months training and competing in Belgium and Spain in preparation for the Paris Olympics.

The trio arrived at the Olympic Games Village in Paris on Thursday.

"Alhamdulillah, this was one of the best training camps we have had," said Azizulhasni recently.

"In terms of our preparations, it has been solid. We had no issues with injuries or any other problems. I had the best team (members) with me.

"The only thing was that it was quite long. We spent one month in Belgium and one month in Mallorca (Spain) and I have been counting the days until my competition starts.

"But we are here now and will continue our training and preparations, such as doing video (analysis) and so on.

"At the same time we also have to find time to relax. We have to balance the serious part with some fun."

Azizulhasni and Shah are under the Youth and Sports Ministry's Road to Gold (RTG) programme.

RTG is an elite athlete preparation programme intended to provide cream-of-the-crop athletes the additional support they need to challenge for gold in Paris, LA2028 and other major international competitions.

Azizulhasni, a keirin bronze medallist at Rio 2016 and silver medallist at Tokyo 2020, has made it clear that he remains as determined as ever to hunt down Malaysia's first-ever Olympic gold.

His best chance of doing so will again be in the men's keirin which starts at Saint Quentin en Yvelines on Saturday.

Azizulhasni and Shah will first compete in the individual sprint event which begins on Wednesday.
