KUALA LUMPUR: Most respondents in a recent poll want former world keirin champion Azizulhasni Awang to continue and not retire.
According to a poll conducted by Berita Harian Online since 3pm today, 56 per cent of voters (1,262 votes) favoured Azizulhasni continuing his career, while 40 per cent (901 votes) supported retirement.
Two per cent (58 votes) offered suggestions in the comments section.
The decision of whether to retire or continue rests with Azizulhasni, who must carefully evaluate his options, particularly with Shah Firdaus Sahrom capable of taking on the lead cyclist role.
Comments revealed a range of opinions, with some suggesting that Azizulhasni should focus on developing young talent and spending more time with his family.
"Datuk Azizul is still the best... there is something special about him that other cyclists lack. If someone can match him, fine. LA 2028, first gold, God willing," wrote Zaidi Idris.
Zayn Zyad expressed that if Azizulhasni remains confident about competing in LA 2028, it is worth supporting him.
"If he believes he can still make it, there is no harm in supporting him... especially if he qualifies for LA 2028 on merit. The association (Malaysian National Cycling Federation) should ensure there is a plan to develop new young talents apart from Shah Firdaus," wrote Zayn Zyad.
Some netizens have raised concerns about Azizulhasni's health following open-heart surgery in 2022 for a rare heart condition.
"Retire due to age and health concerns. Continue to contribute to cycling as a certified coach," wrote HjAzizan Hj Adam.
"If he feels he can still compete, that's fine. But don't place all hopes on him. By the next Olympics, he'll be 40. It would be better for him to organise scheduled cycling clinics to scout new talent," wrote Mohd Zaikam.
M. Ahmad Mohamed suggested Azizulhasni should retire, akin to national badminton legend Datuk Lee Chong Wei's retirement.
"Retire. DLCW (Chong Wei) is a legend who also failed to win gold in three editions. He chose to retire at his peak due to health and fitness. Follow DLCW's example," wrote M Ahmad.
AmirulHayat AbdulRazak believes Azizulhasni should focus on his family.
"He is 36 and has a family. It's time to focus on them. He has already proven himself. Spend quality time with your family while you can," wrote AmirulHayat.
Azizulhasni was disqualified from his keirin heat at the Paris Olympics last week for overtaking the derny before it left the track.
