FAM could lose brains behind DNA project

THE brains behind the Malaysian football DNA project, Peter De Roo could soon walk away.

The FA of Malaysia (FAM), however, do not want to lose their technical director and have decided to offer him a new contract. The Australian’s contract expires in September.

It is learnt that De Roo, who joined FAM in 2017, has been offered jobs by other parties, and may not extend his stay in Malaysia.

If that happens, this will be a huge blow to Malaysian football as FAM still need De Roo’s services to ensure that the newly-launched Malaysian football DNA programme will be a success.

“Yes, De Roo’s contract is expiring soon. However, we have offered him a new contract, and currently both parties are in discussion,” said FAM president Datuk Hamidin Amin on Thursday.

“We want him to stay and carry on with his tasks here. However, if we can’t match his other offers, then we would think about other alternatives.

“But, frankly, it is better for him to remain with us as the DNA project is his baby, and we want this initiative to help change the landscape of Malaysian football.”

Among the objectives of the Malaysian football DNA project, which was launched on Tuesday, is to produce creative players that can dominate games through high-pressing technique under certain types of formations.

De Roo headed the think-tank group that came up with the programme 18 months ago.
