Rampant Penang clinch PL title

PENANG clinched the Premier League title after crushing Kelantan United 4-0 at the City Stadium on Friday.

It is the Panthers' first title since their success in the 2013 FAM League (now known as M3 League).

Penang have 26 points, five more and second-placed Kuala Lumpur, who drew 0-0 against Perak II in Manjung on Friday, with one round left to play.

Both teams will play in the Super League next season.

South Korean Lee Chang-hoon (18th minute), Al-Hafiz Harun (20th), Bobby Gonzales (55th) and Brazilian Anselmo da Silva (73rd) netted for Penang.

Coach Manzoor Azwira Wahid described it as an outstanding achievement. He also dedicated the title to the Penang fans.

"The title is a bonus as our initial target was to qualify for next season's Super League.

"I am very grateful. Thanks to the support from the state government, management, supporters and players who had played diligently, we succeeded in creating history by winning the Premier League with one match left," he told reporters after the match.

As for the final act against Terengganu FC II on Friday, Manzoor may rest his regulars and field his fringe players.

"This match is an opportunity for the fringe players to show their mettle. Several first-team players have picked up injuries. I want them to be fresh for the Malaysia Cup.

Manzoor said his team will now shift their focus on the Malaysia Cup.

"The plan is to prepare the players in term of fitness and tactics for the Malaysia Cup campaign," he added.

For the record, Penang have recorded four wins in the Malaysia Cup. - BERNAMA
