Just a job for 'Midas' Hodak as coach steers KL City to AFC Cup final

KUALA LUMPUR: Bojan Hodak is used to the "big nights" of his team winning, but it was just another day in the office for the Kuala Lumpur City coach.

And that was after the Croatian helped KL City create history by taking his team into the AFC Cup final.

KL City beat Uzbekistan's PFC Sogdiana 5-3 on penalties in the AFC Cup Inter-Zone final in Jizzakh on Wednesday.

Over the years, Hodak has been the man with the Midas touch to Malaysian teams.

He guided Kelantan to a treble in 2012 as they swept the Super League, FA Cup and Malaysia Cup, and also the FA Cup title the following year.

And he was the man who guided Johor Darul Ta'zim to their first-ever Super League title in 2014.

Hodak's two-year tenure with the national Under-19 team saw him guiding Malaysia to the 2018 AFF Youth Championships title.

And last year, Hodak won the Malaysia Cup title for the City Boys. Now KL City are counting on Hodak to work his magic again in the AFC Cup final against Oman's Al Seeb at the KLFA Stadium on Oct 22.

"Just like everyone else, I just did my job... We will shift our focus to our next two Super League matches, then get ready for the AFC Cup final," said Hodak.

"There's a lot of excitement with the team's success and we are happy to enter the final but we are focused on taking one game at a time.

"I don't think too much after winning matches or records, I just want to do my job and in football, you are only as good as your last win," he said.

The City Boys, making their debut in the Asian-level competition, created history by marching to the final, sweeping aside Vietnam's Viettel in the Asean Zonal semi-final, Indonesia's PSM Makassar in the Asean zone final and in the Inter-Zone semi-finals, they beat ATK Mohun Bagan of India.

KL City are in line to become the second Malaysia club ever to win the AFC Cup after Johor Darul Ta'zim's success in 2015.

Commenting on the penalty shootout win over Sogdiana, Hodak said he decided to pick Filipino goalkeeper Kevin Ray Mendoza ahead of local custodian Azri Ghani and drop Ghanaian forward Jordan Mintah from the squad.

"Azri was the reason why we progressed to the Inter-Zone final but I felt we needed Kevin in this match as Sogdiana are a very physical side. Kevin performed well during the match as well in the shootout," said Hodak.

"We don't have any stars in the team but we have a good atmosphere in the changing room and everyone fights for each other. We will be playing the final in Kuala Lumpur and we hope we can get a full crowd to support the team."
