KUALA LUMPUR: If FAM tells state FAs to take over the management of Youth and President's Cup teams from Super League clubs, this could create more issues for Malaysian football.
This was stated by football critic Dr Zulakbal Abdul Karim as FAM considers the move as a solution to the problems of clubs failing to pay wages to players.
Zulakbal said while proper financial management could solve the problem, the bigger issue is the lackadaisical approach to youth development.
He raised concerns that if state FAs take over, it could affect the young players' career pathway for a seamless transition to FC.
"I have heard about this plan for some time. When the shift from FA teams to football clubs (FC) occurred in Malaysian football, several problems emerged," said the Asian Football Confederation Professional Coaching Diploma holder.
"This happens because the football clubs face financial constraints. Clubs need to invest in youth development, but it's not glamorous enough, so they are reluctant to invest in it.
"If the FAs handle development and produce players for the Youth Cup and President's Cup, what will happen to these players afterwards?
"What is the career path for these young players, and what guarantees are there that these talents will get to play with football clubs?
"Will there be a formal agreement between the FA and the FC to facilitate the transition from youth to senior level?
"A clear and structured pathway for youth development is crucial. Players should progress seamlessly from grassroots to youth level and then to senior football."
Zulakbal said a lack of understanding of football structure is the reason for clubs taking development lightly.
"This is why a structured pathway for youth development is important and must be established. The players should progress from grassroots to youth level and then to senior football, continuity is crucial," said the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris Sports Science associate professor.
"I see that there's a lack of football knowledge in this country. Most only focus on senior football and totally neglect youth football, which is actually a very important factor for football success.
"Most advanced football nations give a lot of focus to youth football... parents and the community play a big role. When you build a house, you need to start with a strong foundation."
