KUALA LUMPUR: Fergus Tierney's name is set to resonate across Asean football after his crucial equaliser salvaged a 2-2 draw for Malaysia against minnows Cambodia in the Asean Cup on Sunday.
The 21-year-old Malaysian-Scottish forward netted his first senior international goal, ensuring Harimau Malaya avoided an embarrassing defeat in Phnom Penh.
While Tierney's strike earned Malaysia a crucial point, the result left the young forward dissatisfied as he had set his sights on victory.
"We came here to win, so it was disappointing overall. But especially after coming from behind, we'll take the point and focus on the next game. Our goal is to get three points against Timor Leste," said Tierney, referring to Malaysia's next Group A match at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Wednesday.
Tierney came on as a substitute in the 70th minute, replacing Paulo Josue, and made an immediate impact.
"I came on hoping to make an impact, and I think I did that positively," he said.
"I'm happy to have scored my first goal for the senior team. Hopefully, I can keep that momentum going into the next match."
Despite the thrill of scoring, Tierney remains focused on the team's overall performance.
"I'm buzzing to have scored, but I can't be too happy knowing that we didn't pick up all three points," he added.
The forward, who enjoys the unwavering support of his family at every national team match, revealed he has yet to watch a replay of his goal.
"It happened so quickly, I haven't had a chance to watch the goal yet. I'm looking forward to hearing from my mom, dad, and sisters once I get internet access," Tierney said.
Currently on a four-month loan with Thai League 2 side Chonburi FC, Tierney will return to Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) after completing his stint in Thailand.
