KUALA LUMPUR: Harimau Malaya caretaker coach Pau Marti Vicente and captain Syamer Kutty Abba called on Malaysian fans to remain hopeful ahead of their crucial Asean Cup Group A clash against Thailand at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok tomorrow (Dec 14, 9pm).
At the pre-match press conference on Friday, Spaniard Vicente admitted it would be challenging against the defending champions without several key players.
"We are missing a few regulars, but we have a big squad of 26. Anyone selected to play will be motivated," said Vicente.
"The players are young and eager to play in tournaments, big stadiums and against strong teams. They are highly motivated."
Malaysia will be without four Sabah players — Dominic Tan, Darren Lok, Daniel Ting and Stuart Wilkin — who were recalled for their Malaysia Cup quarter-final match against Kuching City on Sunday.
Forward Syafiq Ahmad is also sidelined with an injury sustained during the 3-2 victory over Timor Leste on Wednesday.
Captain Syamer admitted Malaysia's performances in the 2-2 draw against Cambodia (Dec 8) and the win over Timor Leste were below par but urged fans to stay supportive.
"I understand the fans' disappointment. These were not our best performances, and they have the right to feel that way," said Syamer.
"However, we are a team, and we stick together. We remain positive and work on improving. I hope fans will stand by us. It's not the time for criticism or giving up hope in this short tournament."
Malaysia lead Group A with four points from two matches.
Thailand are second with three points from one game, followed by Singapore (three), Cambodia (one), and Timor Leste (zero).
