Kelly fights back to stay on course in LPGA Match Play

Kelly Tan recovered from two down in the last four holes to hold Thailand's Pajaree Anannarukarn to a draw and keep her hopes alive of advancing into the knockout stage of the US$1.5mil (RM6.58m) LPGA Match Play in Nevada, United States.

The 28-year-old found herself playing catch up from the start at the Shadow Creek Golf Course on Thursday, having to respond twice after trailing in the second and sixth holes.

Kelly pegged Pajaree back with birdies on the fourth and 11th.

The world No 61 Thai, however, stormed back in front by winning two of the next three holes to go two-up.

But a gritty Kelly pulled one back on the 15th before beating Pajaree again on the all-important 18th to deny the latter a victory.

The draw result, worth 0.5 points, was crucial for Kelly as it placed her second in Group Four on 1.5 points behind leader Ji Eun Hee (2.0) of South Korea after two round-robin matches.

Kelly earned her first point on Wednesday with a stunning 7&6 win over American Solheim Cup star Danielle Kang.

Pajaree, who lost to Eun Hee earlier, is third on 0.5 points while Danielle is still without a point following a second straight defeat to the Korean.

Kelly will take on Eun Hee in a must win match as she eyes a place in the last 16 knockout stage.

"I love it (match play format), it's very different from stroke play," said Kelly.

"It's hole by hole, shot by shot. Doesn't matter if you win with whatever score, the end goal is to win.

"So you can choose to play aggressive or you can choose just play conservative depending what your opponent is up to," said Kelly.

Meanwhile, the US-based Liyana Durisic finished a creditable joint-fifth (individually) to help the Malaysian women's team to an improved position in the Queen Sirikit Cup in Singapore.

Liyana, together with Siti Zulaikah Nurziana Nasser and Ng Jing Xuen, who competed in the recent Hanoi Sea Games, emerged joint seventh with Australia.

Malaysia carded a four-day total of one-over 434, 21 shots behind winners Japan.

The last time the tournament took place, in 2019 in Adelaide, Australia, Malaysia finished eighth.
