Ammer wins MGA Junior Open in thrilling playoff

KUALA LUMPUR: Ammer Aiman Fauzi cemented his status as a rising golf star by clinching victory at the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) International Junior Golf Open in Johor recently.

The 17-year-old triumphed over South Korea's Kevin Woo in the first extra hole of the playoff, securing the overall boys' title in the four-day event at Senibong Golf Club in Gelang Patah on Oct 5.

Both players completed the 54-hole tournament with matching two-under 214 totals, winning their respective Under-18 and Under-15 categories.

Reflecting on his journey, Ammer noted his rapid progress despite only taking up golf seriously at age 12.

"I was more active in football. But after giving golf a try, I realised it was my sport," said Ammer, who has already won 10 titles.

"My success has given me the confidence to push forward."

With his sights set on the future, Ammer aspires to secure a scholarship for collegiate golf in the United States and ultimately turn professional.

In the women's division, South Korea's Bae Eun Kyung claimed the overall title.

The 16-year-old dominated the Under-18 category, posting a 208 total to win by seven shots over Malaysia's Nur Batrisyia Abd Ghani.

Eun Kyung outstanding effort also saw her top the overall leaderboard, edging out Under-15 winner Nur Diana Abdullah, who finished with a 215 aggregate.
