KUALA LUMPUR: Weiron Tan has continued to impress since making the jump from endurance racing to competing in the Blancpain GT World Challenge Asia series this season.
Weiron and Audi Sport Asia Team Absolute Racing teammate Martin Rump (Estonia) were in strong form in the second round of the series which was held at the Chang International Circuit in Thailand over the weekend.
In race one on Saturday, the duo, who share an Audi R8 LMS GT3, came in third in their GT3S class as well as third overall.
Roelof Bruins-Manuel Metzger (Solite Indigo Racing) took the overall win in race one while S. Tanart-Philip Hamprecht (Absolute Racing) were second. Both pairs also compete in the GT3S class.
Weiron and Rump, however, were forced to retire from race two in Buriram on Sunday after Rump was struck by another car just after the start.
"I am very happy to secure my first overall podium finish with my team in the championships this season," said Weiron, who is a former World Endurance Championship (WEC) driver.
"Unfortunately, race two didn't go as planned, my teammate started the race in sixth and was hit by another car just after the lights went out.
"We suffered heavy damage on the rear which meant retirement for us.
"Overall, the weekend was positive despite an unlucky race two, we have much work to do and hope to further improve as a team before the next round."
Weiron and Rump were placed third in class and fourth overall in race two during the season opening round at Sepang last month.
The next round of the series will be held at the Suzuka International Circuit on June 22-23.
