Julian happy with his personal best performance in Pyeongchang

KUALA LUMPUR: Luck was not on Julian Yee's side as he just missed out on qualifying for the final of the men's single skating short programme event at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics on Friday.

Julian came in 25th, just outside the top-24 cut for the final, after garnering a combined 73.58 total (38.37 in technical elements and 35.21 in programme component) at the Gangneung Ice Arena.

He stepped onto the ice rink looking very confident but accept for one small mistake, he performed commendably in front of fans and other skaters.

The 20-year-old, who performed to The Cinematic Orchestra's 'To Build a Home' can hold his head high as it was his personal best score.

Julian, who is the first-ever Malaysian figure skater to qualify for the Winter Olympics, had no regrets.

"Today's programme was quite good, I really went out there and gave it my all," said Julian, when contacted today.

"I think we can be quite satisfied with the result as well as getting a new personal best score.

"That was the goal and we are just very, very appreciative of being here."

Team manager Irene Cheow echoed Julian's sentiments.

"I am actually very proud of him, he did his personal best and that is all we asked for," said Irene, who is also Julian's mother.

Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu topped the round with a 111.68 score while Spaniard Javier Fernandez (107.58) and Shoma Uno (104.17) of Japan came in second and third respectively.

Alpine ski racer Jeffrey Webb, the only other Malaysia in Pyeongchang, will compete in his event on Sunday.
