Weightlifting delivers Malaysia's 2nd gold

GOLD COAST: National weightlifting athlete, Muhammad Aznil Bidin brought even more cheer for Malaysia on the first day of the Commonwealth Games as he delivered the second gold medal for the country when he won the men’s 62kg category at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre here earlier today.

The Podium Programme weightlifting athlete managed a lift of 126kg in the snatch event and 162kg in the clean & jerk for a grand total of 288kg.

Silver went to Papua New Guinea’s Morea Baru who was 2kg off Aznil with a total of 286kg while bronze went to Pakistan’s Talha Talib with 283kg.

Earlier, another national weightlifting athlete, Azroy Hazal Wafie Izhar Ahmad made history at the Games by being the first national athlete to win gold.

What made the success even more meaningful was the fact that Azroy broke two Games records that were previously held by the national weightlifting team manager, Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim in the snatch event and overall.

Azroy executed a lift of 117kg in the snatch, bettering the previous record of 116kg Amirul achieved at the 2010 New Delhi edition, and 144kg in the clean & jerk for a total of 261kg to break the record set by Amirul at the 2002 Manchester edition.
