'Shameful videos' divers promise never to do it again

KUALA LUMPUR: The Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (ASUM) have confirmed the involvement of seven national divers partying and drinking alcohol during their training in Guangzhou, China.

In a statement issued by ASUM secretary, Mae Chan today, it said the videos were filmed during a Chinese New Year’s Eve dinner hosted by an accommodation manager in China.

The divers involved are said to be Pandelela Rinong, Nur Dhabitah Sabri, Chew Yiwei, Hanis Nazirul Jaya Surya, Jellson Jabillin, Gabriel Gilbert Daim and Kimberly Bong.

“The videos, leaked in social media a few days ago involving the divers, were filmed during a Chinese New Year’s Eve dinner, hosted by the accommodation manager in China during their three-day break.

“Three coaches were there for the trip but were unaware of the filmed incident, which took place behind closed doors in a private area,” the statement said.

The statement also highlighted the divers’ successes, including the silver and bronze medals won at the World Series 1 and 2 in China and Japan before bagging three medals at the Commonwealth Games.

“The athletes have admitted their wrongdoing and they have promised never to do it again. They have learned from their mistake and they would like to offer an apology to the public.

“An investigation committee will determine what action to be taken against them.

“And we will forward their recommendations to the ASUM disciplinary committee.”

The athletes’ allowances have been suspended with immediate effect and ASUM are to hold a press conference to address the issue tomorrow.

This is the latest controversy to hit the Malaysian team after national coach Huang Qiang of China was recently acquitted of the rape of a Malaysian diver.
